PULP SUMMR SLAM 9

SuLyAp

Minsan sakin pag-iisa
Nakita kitang lumuluha
Siguro ay nagdaramdam
Sa sinabi ng iyong syota

Pero bakit ganito ako
Tuluyang lumalapit
At napapaibig mo

Konting tingin mo lang bawat sulyap
At ako'y napapasunod mo
Konting ngiti mo lang bawat pansin
At ako'y lalapit na ahh ahh …

Sa iyong ngiti
Mundo ko'y nabubuo
Pero ng sabihin mo
Wag ka ng susundan

Ang mundo ko pagkaganda ganda
Ay bigla lang nawala
Nandirito pa rin ako
Maghihintay na magbago ang isipan mo

Konting tingin mo lang bawat sulyap
At ako'y napapasunod mo
Konting ngiti mo lang bawat pansin
At ako'y lalapit na ahh ahh…

Konting tingin mo lang bawat sulyap
At ako'y napapasunod mo
Konting ngiti mo lang bawat pansin
At ako'y lalapit na ahh ahh…

Konting tingin mo lang bawat sulyap
Konting ngiti, bawat pansin

Mangingibig silang hahalik
Sa nagnanaknak kong talampakan.
Walang radyo na aawit
Ng banyagaing kundiman para sa akin.
Sa papaantok na gabi,
Ihehele ako ng busina
At pagmumura ng ayaw-matulog na kalsada.
Bukas ay lilipat ako
Ng ibang basurahang matutulugan.
Muli, bago ako maidlip,
Pupunasan ko muna at patutuyuin
Ang banig kong iyong pinag-ihian.

He walked past me, half-naked; his entire body covered with the by-product of the city’s never-ending quest for progress.

He is by all estimate still young, probably in his early thirties. And yet, he walks as if he carries the burden of the world on his back.

Homeless and desperately in need of nourishment, he wanders aimlessly like a raft lost in a sea of humanity who, by far and large, takes little notice of the man dressed in grease and soot.

What unfortunate circumstances made him that way I wondered… how could someone born in this world full of possibilities turn into what many would regard as the dreg of modern society?

Looking at him I realized that despite all my problems, perceived or otherwise, I can still count myself as fortunate; and that my setbacks, though too many to count, were mere inconveniences — minor actually — compared to his own plight.

How stupid of me to be ranting about my woes, I thought, when I could have ended up like this guy, or even worse…

So, taking pity on the man — coupled with the noble intention of feeding a downtrodden individual for at least one day — I fished out a few bills from of my wallet when suddenly, I noticed, he stopped walking…

Photobucket

He looked around, and perhaps finding the perfect place to rest his weary legs, he nonchalantly took out a crumpled pack of cigarettes from the pocket of his dirty, well-worn shorts and lighted up.

And there he sat, on the sidewalk… deep in his own thoughts and with nary a care in the world, he puffed away happily.

I promptly returned the peso bills in my wallet and walked away…

I’ll be darned if I’m gonna help feed his vices.

TV5's "Rakista" offers more than just rock n’ roll clichés

Leading the charge for TV5's exciting series Rakista is Denise Laurel (left) together with Wincy Ong (middle) and Carlo Aquino (right). "The show does not focus talaga on the band. Kumbaga ‘yong band in just a milieu of the script so its really about the characters," explains Wincy, who portrays the character of drummer Sven.

The title is as straightforward as it gets. But TV5's newest hit series Rakista offers more than just rock music and young people trying to live up their dreams of making it big in the clichéd world of rock n' roll.

"Although the title speaks for itself na Rakista nga it's not really just about a rock band but a way of life na when you say r-a-k-e-n-r-o-l, na Filipino term for rock n' roll, term siya ng mga kabataan ngayon na parang let's just do our thing," explained director Wincy Ong, who is portraying the role of a drummer named Sven.

Rakista, he added, encourages young people to live outside the box and to take chances. "Take it as it comes," smiled Wincy.

CULT FOLLOWING.
True to TV5's objective of offering alternative programs meant to challenge the formulaic menu offered by the two giant networks, Rakista tells the story of a young and unassuming musician named Caloy (portrayed by Carlo Aquino) who is determined to brandish his musical talent through his band called The Love Team.

Caloy's desire to form a band and write songs actually stemmed from his desire to express his hidden feelings for a girl named CC (played by Denise Laurel).

The show combines a number of elements not common in local programs. Aside from veering away from heavy drama and the fantaserye genre, viewers would surely be enthralled by the show's music (supervised by Ciudad's Mikey Amistoso and Pedicab's Diego Mapa), the twisted humor complementing the bizarre plot. Award-winning writer and Radioactive Sago Project frontman Lourd de Veyra lends his voice to add color to the narration.

Since its initial telecast last August 14, Rakista was able to attract a cult following which continues to grow in numbers every week. Even the people behind the show are surprised with the turnout of viewers.

Wincy, talking about demographics, proudly shared: "That's the weird thing because obviously we were targeting a younger market pero mostly ‘yong mga nakukuha naming crowd mga Eraserheads crowd e, mga 25 to 30 years old. Kasi siguro mostly kami-kami rin, e, the writers, directors 25 going on 30 tapos we're on extended adolescence siguro. We're just going back to our college days I guess, ‘yong sensibilities."

I didn’t have any regrets at all for watching it. In fact, I find the “Eraserheads episode” cool. Though it could be a bit cheesy, it wasn’t bad at all. It is even better than to some shows being aired over the two giant networks so you should never miss “Rakista“! Honestly, it even exceeded my expectations.

So what is Rakista all about?

Rakista is a weekly television comedy about the misadventures of a newly formed rock band called The Love Team, composed of five college students. There’s Caloy (Carlo Aquino), the introverted songwriter who formed the band because of the girl he loves; Ted (Charles Christianson), the chick-hungry manager who thought being in a band could improve his chances with the ladies; Nix (Alchris Galura), the musical prodigy who thinks he is above everyone else; Bebe (Rhea Nakpil), the emotional girl who refuses to be known as such; and finally, Sven (Wincy Ong), the school weirdo whose identity is about having as many identites as possible.

The Love Team was initially formed during an Eraserheads tribute night, when the two best friends Ted and Caloy decided that forming a band would increase their chances of romance. Caloy has been head-over-heels in love for the longest time with CC (Denise Laurel), a former-prom-queen-turned-artist.

During the same night, CC and Caloy form a bond that turns the two into good friends. It’s obvious that the two are perfect for each other. There’s just one thing – CC is the girlfriend of the most popular man on campus – Sonny Valencia (Marco Morales) : swim team captain, all-around nice guy and school presidential candidate.

And that’s just the beginning. Throughout the series, the band goes through all the ups and downs that a Pinoy indie band goes through: from the first gig to recording a demo to near break-ups to hellish jamming sessions. They go through a lot of other weird things no Pinoy band goes through as well – assassination attempts, an escape from Cubao X, artist zombies, the evil ping pong team and angry mobs at the Eraserheads reunion concert.

Rakista was created by award-winning filmmaker Quark Henares and Diego Castillo, guitarist of the rock band Sandwich. Apart from the two, writers for the show include Palanca Award-winning author Yvette Tan and Philippine Star columnist Erwin Romulo.

The roster of directors include music video directors King Palisoc, Mihk Vergara, Zig Marasigan, Edsel Abesames and cult favorite RA Rivera, who won best director at MTV Pilipinas music awards for his video of Radioactive Sago Project’s Astro. Mikey Amistoso of Ciudad and Diego Mapa of Cambio are credited with the original music of the series, and each episode also features narration by poet and vocalis of Radioactive Sago Project, Lourd de Veyra.

Rakista airs every Thursday night at 7 pm, with replays on Sundays at 1 pm on TV5.

The Sound Of The Giant South is gaining more recognition around the nation like never before. At the forefront of the whole movement is a band that has a record that surpasses most bands than that of the bands that have come out of the Queen City of Cebu. They are none other than Urbandub.

From the very first day that this band was formed (in the year 2000), they were destined to be something more than the ordinary. Forced to be independent due to the lack of support coming from major record companies, Urbandub released their debut album called BIRTH. Off of this album, the hit tracks "Come", "Give" and "Would You Go" launched and took their world by storm. Unique, timely and yet experimental, it was something that entertainment scenes around the Philippines needed: a kick start into the future of original music.

With the release of their sophomore effort, INFLUENCE (Lighter Records), Urbandub took on a new form, changing their sound with a new drummer (From Jed Honrado to Jerros Dolino). It was the sound in this album that clearly defined the steps that Urbandub would start to take. The track "Soul Searching" later won the award as Song of the Year in the NU107 Rock Awards 2003. Pushing the sound further, the collection bagged the Album Of The Year Award in the NU107 Rock Awards 2004.

Today, Urbandub now offers yet a third helping of what they are capable of. With the 2005 release of the album EMBRACE, Urbandub has proven that there is hope for the struggling artist. With help from their community and the noise they have created, they were able to grab the attention of EMI Music Philippines. Not one to take chances, the band has kept Lighter Records as their management arm and guide. In line with their ideals, EMI allowed them the creative freedom to record their album on their home soil of Cebu. Added to that, they have been able to maintain their independent principles while taking major steps into the scene that has awaited their new sound.

Urbandub is Gabby Alipe (Vocalist / Guitarist), Lalay Lim (Bassist), John Mendoza (Drummer) and John Dinopol (Lead Guitarist).

Urbandubs career thus far has given much inspiration and support to upcoming acts, most of which fall under the Lighter Records stable such as Faspitch, The Ambassadors, Still, Nuncyspungen (Cagayan) and Point Click Kill (Ilo-Ilo). Each of them now aspire to take their own roads in music, paving their own way and modeling some of their steps after the success of Urbandub.

WHY "URBANDUB"?
the story behind the name according to Gabby:

When we were just starting out.. urbandub was supposed to be a reggae band... we were suppose to play reggae mixed with dub, ska, dancehall, hiphop, and rock. A perfect example of what urbandub would have been--is the song "sailing" and "eating me" --that was the style we were suppose to be playing around with--since we were suppose to be a reggae/dub band, hence the name, urbandub. But because of the series of line up changes--and new influences--we became what we are today! The name just kinda got stuck and we never bothered to change it. So there you go.. the story behind the name "urbandub".
